David T. Haussler - Artist / Sculptor
Welded Steel Sculpture Workshop Basic/Advanced Course
Held at Fort Salonga Studios "Walnut Acres"
I am pleased to present this class since it will offer students interested in either basic or advanced welding a chance to take their artistic talents in a new and exciting direction.
The course will have six sessions with a maximum of ten students per class. All students must be at least 16 years of age in order to participate.
This course is designed for those who have previously taken the Welded Steel Sculpture Workshop Beginners Course or have experience in any type of welding. Individuals having no previous experience but with an interest in learning how to do welded sculpture can sign up for this class. Whether a beginner or advanced metal sculptor, every participant will be provided with small group instruction and individualized attention to accommodate different levels of ability and artistic styles.
Students will learn about various methods of steel sculpture fabrication through electrical stick welding, wire feed, MIG welding, plasma cutting, gas cutting, cool and hot bending, grinding, and finishes. Each student will have an opportunity to plan designs with templates, draw, cut the steel, and weld his or her sculpture together. Participants will be advised about and instructed in all necessary safety techniques. In addition, guidelines will be provided for people interested in setting up their own studios.
Every student will design and fabricate a sculpture that incorporates the basic welding techniques they’ve learned. Those individuals with previous welding experience can incorporate a steel sculpture with sculptures from prior metal fabricating classes. Advanced students will learn more about design as they master their technique skills.
It is important to dress appropriately for the course. Since work is done with heavy metal, near heat and in protective gear, the temperatures in the studio are kept quite cool. In addition, work will often be done outdoors, so it is best to dress in layers. It is suggested that you wear 100% cotton jeans, a flannel shirt, and work boots.
